The undertreatment of pain is a major public health problem in New Mexico.  The New Mexico Pain Initiative, a member of the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives, was formed in the early 1990’s, and has been active in developing the following principles:

1.  Educate health care and allied professionals about pain, its treatment, and their role in seeing better pain control for the citizens of New Mexico.

2.  Provide information to individuals experiencing pain, their families along with the general public to permit responsive and knowledgeable reactions to the problem.

3.  Dispel the myth that pain is inevitable and untreatable.

4.  Seek local and state legislative involvement.  Evaluate laws and regulations that may present barriers to relieving pain.
